To mark the start of the annual D.H. Lawrence Festival, which takes place throughout September, we have chosen a biography of the famous Nottinghamshire writer as our Book of the Week.
D. H. Lawrence: The Life of an Outsider by John Worthen is a portrait of a brilliant, radical and misunderstood man, who believed himself to be an outsider. The book follows Lawrence from his awkward youth in Nottinghamshire, through his turbulent relationship with Frieda and the years of exile abroad, to his premature death at the age of 44. It is an intimate and absolutely compelling reappraisal of a man who was in angry revolt against his class, culture and country, and who was engaged in a furious commitment to his writing and a passionate struggle to live according to his beliefs.
John Worthen is Emeritus Professor at the University of Nottingham.
